Secret Life of Plants

In this course students explore the intricacies of the natural botanical world and learn the basic principles of scientific experimentation.  Each student will have the opportunity to raise a plant from seed and watch it grow.  Through hand on activities students will also learn the fundamentals of flower anatomy and photosynthesis.

Big Blue Pebble

Students investigate rocks and minerals, create three-dimensional topographic maps, and conduct soil experiments in this exploration of the Earth’s processes.

Food and the Big Apple

This program follows our food from soil to plate, introducing students to the components of an urban food system. Students explore issues of agriculture, food processing, and nutrition. Projects include a community food assessment and designing a menu for a healthy, sustainable restaurant.

-- Unit 4 - Exploring Ecosystems

Exploring the Urban Forest

Students are introduced to the concepts of biodiversity, environmental health, and habitats as they learn to act as street tree stewards.  On two neighborhood walks, students identify and assess the health of trees in the neighborhood.  They apply this knowledge in the classroom to build models of an urban forest.
